Today is a little less about being a mom and a lot more about being a woman…with hormones…serious serious hormones. Yes, you heard that right; today is about HORMONES! Okay, kind of… it’s also about hair. Now you may be thinking to yourself, “Why do I care about Allison’s hormones or hair?” I realize that you may not, but I also realize that many of us moms have a lot in common with those little boogers! Come on, you remember in the movie Knocked Up when Ben Stone screams at girlfriend, Alison Scott “F@*K you hormones!” … hey, I didn’t say it; however it’s so TRUE! I realize that many of us may suffer from hormone issues and may have many of the same problems… so let’s help each other here! And who knows, maybe you have a different hormone issue that you’d like some answers on… I may or may not have the answers, but I bet the nifty website I found below has them for you 🙂

Well this isn’t meant to be a pity party I promise, but I had a miscarriage in November and ever since then my hormones have been completely out of whack! I’ll spare everyone each and every detail that’s affecting me, but there is an array of things that hormones can affect. I know for me personally I have several symptoms that prove my hormones are way off kilt.

Here’s the short list of some affects of a hormone imbalance:

  • Hair Loss
  • Acne
  • Depression
  • Early Miscarriages
  • Headaches
  • Dry Skin
  • Infertility
  • Mood Swings
  • Hot Flashes
  • Memory Problems
  • Dandruff
  • Weight Loss
  • Weight Gain

There are dozens more symptoms and there’s a great website {this is the website I was talking about above} where you can check off the categories that pertain to your symptoms and determine which hormones are off.

So I told you that today was also about hair… insert HAIR talk! Some of my hormone issues have to do with the hair category. Many Google searches later and I’ve researched going “No Poo”, homemade shampoo recipes, vinegar rinses, almond oil rinses, egg, fenugreek seeds, vegetable diets, the list goes on and on and on and on… seriously there’s a plethora of options. So I haven’t been too fancy schmancy with my homemade concoctions, but I have tried a couple that I wanted to share with all of you. I’m also writing this hormone blog in an effort to see if any of our AMB followers have a secret ingredient you can share with me and the internet world, of course… can’t forget the world-wide web! I’m selfish, I know; however, my friends and family are going to kill me if they have to hear about my hair woes one more time.

Here are the 2 rinses I’ve tried so far

Egg Rinse:

Beat up an egg or two and mix with a tablespoon or two of water. Shampoo your hair as normal, rinse, and slowly pour the egg mixture on your hair. Work the egg mixture into your scalp and allow it to sit for 5-15 minutes… basically shower, shave, hang out, and rinse. I dried my hair as usual with a blow drier and went to bed.

Okay so the next day I seriously smelled like a chicken. I don’t know if it was mental, literal, or a combination of the two, but I seriously felt like I needed to be plucked! I would have washed my hair the very next day because the smell alone was annoying, but I knew that would just dry me out. So I made it one whole additional day before washing my hair. I will say the one pro to the egg rinse was that my hair felt super thick and didn’t get as oily as normal. Still… I smelled like a bird. NO CAN DO. Not every day that is.

White Vinegar Rinse:

Mix ½ cup of vinegar with 2 cups water and Shampoo your hair as normal, rinse, and slowly pour the vinegar mixture on your hair. Work the mixture into your scalp and allow it to sit for 5-15 minutes. I then dried my hair as usual with a blow drier.

Honestly, I thought I would reek of vinegar… really I didn’t. I noticed my hair felt thicker, looked shinier, and didn’t seem as oily.

At the end of the day, I still notice the “hair issue,” but I realize that a solution may not happen overnight. So I might not try the egg thing again, but will definitely continue with the white vinegar. I also purchased apple cider vinegar, which is supposed to be a more potent form of vinegar and thus, more effective. So that’s next on my list of things to try. I’m visiting my dermatologist again this morning and hope to have a better solution. I just want to take a pill and be back to my normal self. My sister keeps telling me that things change when you get older… GREAT, I’m just a couple weeks away from aging another year so the “getting older” line is definitely not music to my ears.

Does anyone else have a hormone imbalance? What did you do to correct the problem? Anyone else have hair issues from their whacky hormones like me? And maybe my problem is less about hormones and more about the 25 lb human monkey I have pulling and hanging from my hair all day long!

  1. My hormones were out of whack until I stopped drinking from water bottles.  It sounds silly, but my nutritionist was explaining that the BPA in the plastics latch on to your hormones (or something like that) and make them go crazy.  I bought a BPA FREE water bottle and noticed a HUGE difference.

On the apple cider vinegar note: you didn’t seem to be struggling with acne, but if you were, it’s amazing for acne.  1 part apple cider vinegar + 8 parts water.  I use it at night on a cotton ball after I’ve washed my face.  Makes you smell like a foot, but it washes off the next day and doesn’t smell after it’s washed off.

  2. My body has been through a lot since the birth of my baby girl. I lost a lot of hair (talking clumps at a time), got the pregnancy mask, had major acne and rashes during my pregnancy and after birth. I also fought depression after birth but I was going through a lot when I had Audrey so it could be a combo of losing a family member, stress and out of balance hormones. I have to be honest and say nothing has worked until recently (my baby is 2 now). Note that I went to several docs and they gave me a ton of steroid cremes to use, which would only calm the rashes temporarily. They would always come back, especially if I was stressed out.  I finally started listening to my dad (he goes to a homeopathic doc for celiac disease). I am taking supplements now and notice a huge difference in my skin and hair. I take curcumin/tumeric, InflaMex shakes, detox tea, fish oil, DHEA, Iron, B12,  I take a shot of coconut oil in the morning and lather it on my skin and all over my hair (hair smells good!). I also changed my diet up. I eat mostly gluten free now, work out, & sit in the sauna a few times a week. I also made a huge change in my life, I left my 60hr/week stressful job and now am home full time with my daughter. Unfortunately,  I still have dark spots on my cheeks and a brown lip (Hate it!). Can anyone suggest a place in Austin to have my spots looked at? I am thinking a photofacial or laser treatment?

    • Yikes, Brandi! All of that sounds awful!!! I absolutely love Westlake Dermatology and they have several locations. I may have to try fish oil. I’ve heard good things about coconut oil too :).

      Good luck!

      • Thanks, Allison! I should have mentioned that yes, my hormones were checked and they were a tad off. Nothing alarming. I just think stress and the pregnancy changed my skin, hair, etc.
