When I was in college, I went through the self-discovery stage that most young folks experience the first time they’re sent out on their own.  For me, this resulted in 7 years as a vegetarian and a complete change in the cosmetic products I used.  I am extremely selective when it comes to my shampoos, soaps, toothpastes, cosmetics, or anything else that goes into or onto my body.

A byproduct of that change has been a drastic reduction in the number of products I use.  In fact, my go-to product for most of my needs is Coconut Oil.  And I know from my time on Pinterest that a lot of you are familiar with the benefits of Coconut Oil as well.

Coconut Oil is naturally antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and it helps aid in the absorption of other nutrients.  There are so many uses for this yummy oil, and I’ve listed a few of my favorites below.  I recommend only using cold-pressed Certified Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.

  1. Hair Moisturizer: I use coconut oil on my hair at least once a week, and I’ve noticed a big difference in my normally dry curly locks.  To use, apply liberally to roots and ends.  Let the oil sit on your hair for at least 20 minutes, then wash out with shampoo and condition as normal.  You’ll probably want to shampoo twice to make sure you get all of the oil out of your hair.
  2. Daily Skin Care: Use on face and body for super-soft skin.  I have combination skin on my face, and since I’ve switched to coconut oil I have not had a problem with oil or dryness.  You don’t need much, and it does feel a bit greasy at first, but your skin will absorb the oil after a minute or two, leaving you with soft, fresh-looking skin.
  3. Sun Protection:  Coconut oil naturally has a low SPF factor, which means you are automatically getting a bit of sun protection when you use it as a moisturizer.  You still want to apply a stronger sunscreen if you’ll be out in the sun for a while but I rarely sunburn when I’ve applied coconut oil first.
  4. After-Sun Care: If you do get sunburned, turn to coconut oil to relieve the pain and help your skin heal.  The oil helps draw out the heat of the burn and helps your skin repair faster.  I’ve had pretty bad sunburns that were gone within 24 hours thanks to liberal use of coconut oil!
  5. Dental care:  Since coconut oil is a natural antibacterial, I like to clean my mouth with it after I’ve brushed my teeth before bed.  This helps prevent bacteria growth while I sleep so I wake up with fresh breath.  You can also mix up your own toothpaste by missing baking soda and coconut oil.  (Some people even believe in the whitening power of coconut oil.)
  6. Eye Cream / Makeup Remover: Use a cotton ball to swipe your lids with coconut oil and remove makeup naturally.
  7. Wound Care: Coconut oil helps prevent infection on minor cuts and scrapes while protecting from dirt and germs.
  8. Deodorant: That’s right! Coconut oil can keep your armpits smelling nice and fresh by helping prevent bacterial growth.
  9.  Sexy Time: Coconut oil is perfect for intimate massage and as a natural lubricant when you need it.   It’s all natural and sexy!
  10. New Mommy Care: Many people swear by coconut oil as a stretch-mark preventer.  It can also be used to protect and repair sore, cracked nipples when breastfeeding.  The oil keeps the nipple clean and is safe for baby to ingest.
  11. Infant Massage:  I use coconut oil on my daughter’s skin for infant massage.  It sure does make rubbing those tiny feet and hands a lot easier!
  12. Diaper Cream: Replace your diaper cream with coconut oil for an all-natural solution for diaper rash.  Safe to use with cloth diapers, too!
  13. Detox: Ever heard of oil pulling?  Many people swear by this process as a way to remove toxins from the body.
  14. Cooking: Coconut oil is loaded with good fatty acids that your body needs, and it helps keep your heart healthy by lowering cholesterol levels and high blood pressure.  Drop a tablespoon or two into a smoothie or use it to cook popcorn on the stovetop instead of butter or oil.  Coconut oil has a high heat range so it can be used with a wide range of recipes, including baking.
  15. Goo Remover: Coconut oil mixed with baking soda is perfect for removing sticky residue.

The uses for coconut oil are endless!  I consider it a staple in my pantry, medicine cabinet and cosmetics bag.

Do you have any unusual uses for coconut oil?  What’s your favorite?
