I am a pretty traditional girl when it comes to decorating. I grew up with an elementary school teacher mother who went all-out for every holiday. So I come by it honestly. {grin} But some years my Easter decorations don’t make it out or my Valentine’s Day decor comes out on February 10. Without fail, though, from September 1 through early January, my house is festive with fall and Christmas decorations!

I wanted to talk today about what I consider the best and easiest ways to decorate for the holidays.

What I have found to work for me over the years to simplify decorating {meaning the pre- and post-work!} is to focus on the parts of the house that get the most use – living room/kitchen/dining room. Our house has a very open living area, so I can maximize my decorating by focusing on these spaces. I might add a touch or two to the guest bathroom or the bedrooms, but I get the most bang for my buck in those rooms.

I also decorate from September – Thanksgiving with ‘fall’ decorations and accent with Halloween or Thanksgiving decor. I have lots of pumpkins that I use everywhere and then I add touches of Jack ‘o Lanterns or Pilgrims – this allows me to only have to rotate a little bit of stuff while keeping the house festive!

Never underestimate the power of pumpkins!

I think it’s also great to get crafty with your kids! It’s a cheap and fun way to decorate and make memories with your kids. In the sake of full disclosure, my sister made both of these art projects for our mom out of our 5 kids body parts, but I was her assistant!

Lastly, I think it’s always important to remember the value of a sale and coupons! I am never in the mood to shop for Christmas decorations AFTER Christmas has passed, but I do love going to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and using their 40% off coupons. Sure, it might take several trips to accumulate exactly what I want but well worth it!

So that’s how I decorate and transition from Fall to Christmas.

What is your favorite decorating tip for the holidays?
