We are nearing the end of World Breastfeeding Week and by now you all probably know that August is National Breastfeeding Month.

We know there are a lot of reasons why moms choose to or not to breastfeed. It’s not a decision that moms take lightly. This week is meant to showcase the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of breastfeeding!

Breastfeeding my children was without a doubt the best decision I ever made as a parent. I always knew I would breastfeed and I welcomed it when the time came. Everyone has their reasons for why they choose to breastfeed, but here are a few of mine:

Nutritional Value: Breast milk is packed full of vitamins and nutrients, and can protect your baby against diseases. It is easier to digest than formula, and it may also protect your child from obesity later in life, cause them to have fewer allergies, and less infections.

Bonding: The bond you form with your child when nursing is very unique and cannot be replicated. The skin-to-skin contact during feedings, your baby looking into your eyes and holding your hand while rocking, are memories I will forever cherish.

Weight-loss: They say you burn calories when you nurse but for some people, it is a catch 22 because you are also told you need to intake more calories to produce milk. Some women lose weight while nursing and others do not. I was fortunate to lose my baby weight.

Benefits for momma: Breastfeeding is said to lower the risk of certain cancers in women, plus less chances to have postpartum depression.

Convenience: With breastfeeding, you don’t have to choose between the plethora of formulas, and hope that one works best for your baby without any complications. I also didn’t have to wash bottles and sterilize nipples, which was especially beneficial when it came to 3:00am feedings. Plus, breast milk is always the right temperature.

Save money: Pediatricians recommend that you nurse or use formula for the first year of your baby’s life. Formula, bottles, nipples, nursery water, etc. can get expensive. Breastfeeding on the other hand is free.

Diaper duty: Diaper duty is much more pleasant when your baby is nursing versus taking formula. Have you smelled the difference before?
