Transitioning from elementary school to middle school is a huge milestone in the life of a child, and it can be very overwhelming. A new school alone can be intimidating, and then you add multiple classes and teachers, the responsibility of a locker, worrying about tardies, and just trying to fit in with the older grades. However, it can also be the best and most memorable time of a child’s educational journey. It was for me.

Here are a few tips to help your child transition seamlessly into middle school:

  • Discuss the positive aspects of middle school: There is an upside to middle school. Students have more extra circular activities, electives and organizations to choose from. Your child will also start new friendships that will continue through high school and beyond. Plus, changing classes every period instead of being stuck in your homeroom all day breaks up the monotomy.
  • Take a tour of the school: If offered, try to take a tour of the school prior to the first day of class. Find out where the lockers are located, and buy a lock in advance so your child can practice the combination. Point out where the restrooms are, nurse, school office, gym, cafeteria and their classes.
  • Discuss School Rules and Expectations: A student handbook most likely will be available online so be sure to talk about what is expected of your child. Find out the tardy policy, such as how long does your child have in between classes, and the consequences of too many tardies. Go over behavior expectations and also discuss bullying.
  • Get Organized: Use a calendar to mark important homework deadlines, tests dates, and extra curricular activities. Purchase your child a watch so they can monitor when their classes start so they can minimize tardies. Buy school supplies in advance (most schools post the list ahead of time online). Also, have your child keep a homework assignment sheet in their binder and check it daily. Make sure your child has a designated homework spot at home that is quiet, so that they can read and do their homework. Don’t forget to print your child’s class schedule and have them keep a copy in their binder, as well as at home.
