As women we get tired of being the one “responsible” for the family planning. We take the pill, we wear the patch, we insert the IUD, etc. etc. etc. We are also the ones who have to carry and birth the babies! What if there was a way to make the man responsible?

It Does Exist! Vasectomies: The Male Birth Control

Family planning?

Family planning is traditionally associated with finding to right time to start having children, but what do you do when your kids are out of diapers and you’re not looking to change another one ever again? What do you do when you’re tired of birth controls that affect your mood, interrupt your spontaneity, or aren’t effective? For patients who are certain that they no longer want to have any children, I often recommend a vasectomy. Vasectomies are safe, effective, and much easier than a comparable tubal ligation.

What exactly does this entail?

The procedure itself is fairly simple, takes only about 15 minutes, and can be performed at the urologist’s office. (Fair warning, it does require a shave.) To ensure comfort, patients are offered a sedative and the area is numbed with an anesthetic. From there, a small incision is made in the scrotum and the Vas Deferens is located. Once located, the Vas Deferens is clipped on two sides and a section is removed. Then we stitch up the incision and it’s done! With the Vas Deferens severed, the flow of sperm is impeded, preventing pregnancy.

Recovery?

Recovery is brief and mild. I recommend a day of rest and a week of applying an ice pack to the scrotum. Prescription pain pills may be necessary early on, but after a few days, over the counter painkillers should ease any discomfort. Vasectomy patients can have sex a week after the procedure. Can I get a “wahoo?!”

What’s the chances it, um…takes?

Vasectomies are 99.9% effective and don’t impact sex drive, erections, or orgasm. I believe they are the ideal birth control solution for families who have hit the right size, but still want to enjoy a robust intimate life, free of the hassle of other birth control methods.
