“Everyday may not be good, but there is good in everyday!” Sometimes it’s the simple thoughts that can dictate our lives. And those simple thoughts can translate into what we teach our children each and everyday.

There is something to be thankful for each and everyday. It can be something that seems so very simple — like just being thankful that we opened our eyes to live another day! Or it can be our friends who lift us up when we are feeling down and protect our hearts from those who don’t see our value. It can be the smell of fresh flowers or the smell of freshly brewed coffee. I can be a sunrise with amazing colors or a sunset that sends the moon into the sky. It can be something as simple as being physically stronger than you were the day before. Or learning something you’ve never been able to do in the past.

We don’t have to be the wealthiest people in the world to the thankful for what we have. We don’t have to own everything we’ve ever desired (not that I would turn down a vintage Porsche Speedster) to be thankful for what we have.

How do I teach my children to be thankful? I tell them we are a family who appreciates everything we have. I tell them we are a family who finds good in everyone and everything. I thank them for being who they are — and remind them of how much joy they bring to me. I point out things we should be thankful for constantly! Believe me — it helps brighten my day, too.

During the month of Thanksgiving we do a turkey craft — where we add feathers of what we are thankful for each day. My four year old usually puts down something silly — like cheese and skateboards … and my eight year old generally names a friend or a family member.

What we need to be thankful is to simply love where we are in life, what we’re achieving each and everyday and that we are exactly where we need to be at any given moment. I know — life sucks from time to time. Believe me– I KNOW. But I do believe life is what we make of it — I believe in the power of the mind and if you remember how amazing life really is, you are bound to find just ONE thing in everyday that brings you thanks!
