What Not to Say to a Pregnant Woman | Austin Moms Blog | Erin Ruoff | Pregnancy Tips

I’ve heard some CRAZY things over the past 41 weeks. That’s right — 41 weeks. Some people just have no shame in asking inappropriate questions or saying inappropriate things. I sure won’t miss these:

  1. “You’re as big as a house!” Hmm… Look who’s talking.

  2. “Wow, you’re only ____ months along? You’re so big!” Thanks.

  3. “How are you feeling?” Nice gesture, but the same as yesterday, and the day before and the day before.

  4. “When are you due? You look ready to pop!” Tell me about it.

  5. “How much weight have you gained?” WOW. Are you really asking me this?

  6. “So you like wearing tight clothes to show off that bump, huh?” Yes, actually I do. I don’t like looking like a cow or a tent.

  7. “First babies are ALWAYS late.” I didn’t know you were a doctor…

  8. “Look at that belly!” (From a complete stranger…) Thanks for noticing.

  9. “Are you sure you aren’t having twins?” No, jerk. Just one.

  10. “There’s no way you can deliver without drugs.” Thanks for believing in me.

  11. “You look so uncomfortable.” Thanks for noticing my lack of make up and care…

  12. “You don’t have a name/middle name yet? What’s wrong with you?” Hurtful.

  13. “Are you sure you don’t want decaf?” Yes, I’m VERY sure.

  14. “You might not want to eat that/drink that.” You’re not my doctor. Please, shut up.

  15. “What’s his name? Oh. You should choose ___.” Oh, really? Thanks for indiscreetly telling me you dislike the name that has been in the family for 10 generations.

What’s the worst thing someone has said to you while pregnant?

  1. I hear you! I have been blessed with the ability and financial means to adopt a child(she is now almost 11) and also blessed to carry 2 boys. The comments while adopting expecting were way more hurtful than when I was pregnant expecting. I have come to realize that I have to look at people’s intentions rather than their hurtful & ignorant words. Most do mean well. I also decided I was not going to let them take away the joy I have. I had to keep telling myself, just because someone says something, stating as fact, does not make it true! Don’t get me wrong, I have brought plenty of people up to speed! Be blessed!

  2. Also, for the last 14 years I have been a L&D nurse, the comments are in full force by “well meaning friends and family” in the labor rooms. The insensitive comments still shock sometimes!

  3. I just wrote a blog post about some lady coming up to me in DSW while I was checking out the necklaces NEXT TO the belt rack and saying “I can’t imagine you getting a belt around that,” and laughing. All I could think was I may not be able to get a belt around this belly but I could surely get it around your neck to strangle you!

  4. I just wrote a blog post about this same thing! This past weekend I was at DSW looking at some necklaces located next to a belt rack. Some lady came up behind me, laughed, and said “I can’t imagine you getting a belt around that!.” All I could think was: I may not be able to get a belt around this belly but I could surely get it around your neck to strangle you with!

  5. When I was pregnant, I fantasized daily about responding to the many strangers who had a razor-sharp grasp of the obvious and felt compelled to comment on my appearance with an equally inappropriate and uninvited observation. Never had the guts, so instead I have committed myself to complimenting pregnant ladies on their hair or shoes or some non-bump aspect of their appearance.
