Ahhhh. Back to school. So long for the days of splash pads and playgrounds, your little ones are now going off to the arms of loving teachers. However, before your child heads off for school, preschool, or even Mother’s Day Out, you want to capture that first day glow with an adorable keepsake.

Now I know a thing or two about this – my dad was adamant about taking a first day picture every day from kindergarten through my senior year of high school. Here is proof — all were taken in front of my house I lived in for all 18 years of my adolescence.

While my daughter is just starting MDO this fall, I want to make sure I have pictures for her to look back on with joy (or laughter in my own case) when she gets older. Here are some of the cutest ways to make your darling stand out with some back-to-school photos.

Get giant numbers/letters: Cute and easy way for them to hold up the grade they are going into.

Graduating Class Year T-shirt: Get a large t-shirt with the year they are graduating high school and take a picture in it every year to watch them grow.

Picture with favorite item: It can be a backpack, lunch box, or even a book. Have them hold  something that they loved to commemorate the “new” beginning of the year.

Chalkboard sign/prop: You can buy a chalkboard sign at Target (or make one!) and write a special message or memory for the school year.

Use a Spiral: Nothing screams school more than a notebook, so why not make it basic by writing their grade in a spiral to hold up.

Use an App: My favorite for my newborn monthly updates was a free app called “Over.” After you take a picture, you can use one put special milestones about them.

Have All Your Kids Together: You could have them each hold up a sign or sit on steps with signs indicating their grades next to them.

Download a printable: Another awesome way to keep the memory is use a printable for them to write down (or you write down) their favorite things from when they started the school year. OR they can hold up a sign you printed — here is a colorful option and a chalkboard design.

However you decide to capture the memory, make sure you don’t forget with all the hustle on the first day. Now only 180 more days until the next summer vacation!
