volunteer-during-holiday-season

Want to teach your littles the true meaning of Christmas? How about celebrating by helping feed our city’s hungry & homeless? Do you have a heart for service but feel scrapped for the time, energy & resources on where to volunteer?  I tapped the mind of local mama & philanthropist Joy Rener to compile a list of charities where moms can serve right alongside their kids.

Here’s our round-up of local organizations with opportunities for the entire family to volunteer together:

Little Helping Hands – Engaging families in service projects across Austin in an effort to teach children about leadership, service, and work. Our mission is to engage children in volunteerism and empower them to make a difference in their communities.

Mission Accomplished – Volunteers with “Operation Clean Clothes” pick up clothes of the homeless from designated locations and wash them to increase their self-esteem and confidence. Duties include:  load/unload items into washers, label washers per load, dry, fold, and return the items to each individual.

Casa Marianella – Casa Marianella is a volunteer-driven emergency homeless shelter in East Austin, serving recently-arrived immigrants and asylum seekers from around the world. In addition to shelter, Casa offers access to legal and medical resources, food, clothing, English classes, and other resources.

Central Texas Foodbank – We work with food donors across the country, financial supporters and volunteers to fill unmet needs in Central Texas. This commitment from private, government and charitable partners has allowed us to bring 28 million meals to our community each year and into the hands of families and local nonprofits that turn to us for help.

Mobile Loaves and Fishes – Mobile Loaves & Fishes began when five parishioners of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Austin, Texas boldly answered God’s call to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Alan Graham and his friends began delivering meals out of the back of a minivan to men and women they found living on the streets of their city. Multiple options for volunteering suit any age & interest.

Mission Possible – This program of Church Under the Bridge (which meets weekly under I-35) offers weekly service opportunities and special events to serve hot meals & provide needed items for people living on the street.

Where are your favorite places to volunteer during the holiday season?
