Easter CraftYellwhoa. That’s the first word, my daughter, Henley, said after the typical, “mama” and “hi.” I was fairly certain that yellow didn’t hold any particular meaning to her at the time, but now at 19 months she says basic colors and sometimes even identifies them. Mixing her newfound color knowledge with my love of arts and crafts has been our latest pastime! Even though it gives my husband major anxiety, with Easter right around the corner we busted out the paint and whipped up some speckled bunnies and Easter eggs! It was our first Easter craft!

Part of the fun was talking about the colors and challenging her to pick up purple when asked or to tell me what color she was holding. To make your own fun keep reading for my play-by-play!

The Goods:

  • Cardstock (here, here)
  • Scissors
  • Pom poms (here)
  • Clothespins
  • Non-toxic, acrylic paint
  • Paint palette (here or a muffin tin works in a pinch!)

The Nitty-Gritty:

  • Cut Easter eggs and bunnies. You can use a template (here, here) or freehand.
  • Squeeze a dollop of paint for each color into the palette/tin.
  • Use a clothespin to clip a pom pom for a makeshift paintbrush. The color of the pom pom should match the paint. Do this for each color.
  • Show your little one how to pick up the clothespin and “sponge” paint onto the paper.
  • Pro Tip: I used two different sizes of pom poms so we not only talked about our colors, but also big vs small.

We’re all about free play so, after awhile, painting with pom poms became painting with our fingers. At one point I even threw some shaving cream into the mix. If you have a fellow tot I hope you enjoy this activity as much as we did!
