more than a father

I love my father and how our relationship has grown over time, but I grew up with a hands off dad who was very traditional. I always wanted kids and I often thought of what kind of father I would want for my own children. However, fatherhood was not something my husband grew up wanting and it was the first thing I ever saw him nervous about in our relationship, but I always had faith in him.

I will be completely honest my husband is not the father I thought he would be. He’s so much better. He’s more than a father — he isn’t just a hands-on father, he’s a true daddy. He truly takes time to interact with our son and give him undivided attention. He teaches him life lessons when necessary and at other times is the best thirty something Ninja Turtle or Avenger you’ve ever seen. He genuinely enjoys being around our son and to Thomas there is nothing better than a “Daddy & Dink” day.

The reality is that dads aren’t babysitters, but just like moms they can get overwhelmed at times. My husband not only communicates when he is overwhelmed and needs help but also listens when I need it. When our son underwent a 13-hour surgery he was not only my emotional rock but made sure I ate, took naps, and even got me lots of Starbucks.

Seeing your spouse become a parent is one of the most powerful things your relationship can experience. Many people talk about how they never could’ve imagined how much they loved their child (which is true) but I honestly had no idea how much more I could love my husband for the daddy he became.
