gift for new mom

So your friend just had a baby, but you’re not quite sure what to get her. Perhaps she received everything on her wish list and then some at her baby shower, or you’re simply looking for an out-of-the-box gift idea that she’ll love. Let’s face it — labor and childbirth are tough. The new mama in your life is likely going to be a hormonal combination of overjoyed, exhausted, hangry, and delirious. If you’re looking, snag her something useful that she’ll love, here is our line-up of the best gift ideas for new moms:

Takeout Gift Cards. The last thing in the world that a new mom wants to think about is cooking, right? Between cluster feeding, changing diapers, and sleep deprivation — all while trying to squeeze in a five minute shower — dinner is just low on priority list right now. Give her some gift cards to fantastic local take-out restaurants to help make the transition home a bit smoother.

A Massage. There’s nothing like the ultimate gift of relaxation. If mom is breastfeeding, find an in-home masseuse or choose a location that’s within a few minutes from her, if possible.

Subscription Box. Subscription boxes are like Christmas year round, especially ones that are overflowing with goodies for your new mom friend! I love Ecocentric Mom boxes that are filled with organic and eco-friendly products to pamper mom through every stage of motherhood, as well as FitFabFun boxes, which include great beauty, fashion, and wellness finds.

New Bath Robe or Cozy Pajamas. As a new mom, there will inevitably be a lot of lounging around the house. Having comfortable pajamas or a fun robe can make her feel more refreshed and relaxed. It’s the little things, right?

Soothing Face Masks. To continue the relaxation trend, consider gifting a fun face mask to give her a spa treatment without having to leave home. A fun detox or brightening mask can do wonders for her stress levels and help her easily squeeze in some self-care.

New Mom Snack Basket. Whether or not a new mom is breastfeeding — which can work up quite an appetite — everyone loves a good snack basket. During those first few weeks especially, cooking meals and taking trips to the grocery store is a rarity. Consider filling a basket with some healthy favorites, paired with a few bottles of electrolyte water. I love Lily’s Chocolate, E&C’s Snacks, and Skinny Pop, to name a few.

A house cleaner. Going along with take-out, the less that your new mama friend has to keep up with right now, the better. Bringing home a new baby is such a beautiful time when bonding should be at the forefront of every mom’s mind — not a clean house. Consider hiring a cleaning service to help free up time for more important things — like sleep.

Free Babysitting. All the gifts in the world don’t compare to the love and support of just being there to help her through this transition. Simply offering to hold the baby while she showers or so that her and her partner can have a hot meal together is such a nice and cost effective gesture that she will greatly appreciate.

What do you think? What was your favorite gift that you received?

  1. This is a wonderfully thought out list. Not many new mom’s realize all the things you need and what is to come, but what this it can give them an idea. Going in as a new mom you are pretty much blind sided, however it will all come pretty naturally and you will learn and grow, just like your child.
