This August 3 – 9, Texas State will present a special bilingual adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic farce, The Comedy of Errors. This production will be held on campus and is free and open to the public!
The Comedy of Errors centers on two sets of twins who are separated at birth and live in different cities before being unexpectedly reunited. In this adaptation set in Cuba, all the characters from one city speak Spanish and all those from the other speak English. This resulting linguistic confusion adds to the humorous chaos that makes this play fun to experience.
Additionally, this play offers Spanish-speakers the ability to receive Shakespeare’s text in an accessible, bilingual format.
The issues of identity and alienation at the heart of The Comedy of Errors are particularly relevant to U.S. Latinos. Many negotiate between two cultures that, literally and figuratively, may not always speak the same language.
