V thought she was ready at 7 months old! (At Sterling Hunter Jumpers, summer 2011)

You know the old saying . . . If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride. Well I am not going to lie, I have spent many years of my life “horse-poor”– paying to get my horse’s hooves shod instead of getting myself a manicure, getting her the best alfalfa around while I ate Ramen, saying goodbye to a haircut while I wrote out a check to get her mane pulled and braided for a show . . . You get the picture. And if you are a horse person, then you understand all too well!

So for this week’s Worth it Wednesday, and in conjunction with our giveaway (a free one-hour private lesson at Sterling Hunter Jumpers!!! Have you entered yet???), I wanted to look at whether getting horseback riding lessons for our kiddos is worth it. Well, what is “it” exactly? When it comes to horses, “it” involves all your extra cash, hours of your life ringside while your child trots seemingly endless circles (I am only guessing from my own mother’s point of view since V doesn’t ride yet), and weekends at horse shows sitting on hard wooden benches just to see your kid ride for about five minutes out of the fifteen hours you will be there . . .

. . . And yet, at least from a horse-crazy kiddo’s point of view, it is soooo worth it. There is no friend like a horse when childhood or teen angst gets you down, no thrill like a ribbon won after hours of practice, simply no sport like riding. Jessica says, “Worth it!” If your kiddo agrees, enter our giveaway and then look into signing him or her up for a week-long horsemanship camp (ages 6-16) this summer– for 50% off this week with Living Social’s Sterling Hunter Jumpers deal!

And remember, all you have to do to win a free riding lesson for yourself or someone else (child or adult, beginners or advanced) is post on yesterday’s blog with your favorite horse story, book, movie, or character! Easy peasy!
