We love Halloween at our house.  And when I say love, I mean we L-O-V-E Halloween.  The hubs and I began dressing up when we started dating 15 years ago!  14 years ago (yes, we’ve been together FOREVER!), we began the tradition of hosting a costume party for our friends.  This was pre-kiddos, and was always a LOT of fun.

Last year’s costumes!

Of course, it’s no surprise that I love to dress up for Halloween – since theatre and performing are my favorite things to do, it’s only natural.  But what has been really fun, is seeing all of our friends totally embrace our tradition!  It’s almost more fun as an adult!

I could go on and on about our adults-only debauchery, but, since this is a blog for momma’s, I thought I’d share a few of the fun traditions that we celebrate in our home as a family.  In addition to decorating the house with lots of great décor (by the way, did you see this great DIY post?) that we’ve accumulated over the years (we have 6+ large tubs FULL of Halloween gear), we make lots of yummy Halloween treats to celebrate the occasion.  Trick or Treating is not much fun for a kiddo with multiple food allergies, so we try to incorporate some non-candy fun into our Halloween celebrations!

Several years ago when I was teaching, I stumbled upon this website that had some great ideas for Halloween food for kids.  I loved this site, because many of the recipes were already safe (or easy to make safe) for my kiddo with food allergies.  Plus, they taste great!  The Mummy Dogs, Candy Corn Pizza and Bones and Blood have continued to be a hit with all of our friends and in our house.  The kids gobble it up and they are easy to throw together in a hurry.

Another cute tradition that we have, and that I will be sharing with Hudson’s Kindergarten class tomorrow, is creating some fun Halloween art.  I am huge fan of handprint and footprint art, so we’ll be making ghost feet, and a spooky tree make out of a hand/arm print.

A super funny idea (all the credit goes to my awesome best friend, Amber) when the kids are really little, is to make a booty print pumpkin!  I know, I know, it sounds crazy – but it is SOO cute when they have a tiny heiny!  We have one from when Hudson was little, and I’ll be making one with Finn this year.

And finally, we were BOO’D this year!  One day our doorbell rang, and we opened the door to a bag full of goodies!  You can read more about this fun tradition here.  It’s been a lot of fun seeing the Boo Bag’s going around our town and neighborhood.

So, there you have it!  Some cute ideas that you can add to your Halloween repertoire and make your holiday a little more festive and fun for SUPER easy, possibly with stuff you already have in the house and pantry!  If you’re still searching for some yummy, more-appetizing-for-adults recipes, check out these tasty recipes!  And, of course, don’t forget to take lots of pictures!

Happy Halloween from all of us at Austin Moms Blog!

Many Smiles, Elisabeth
