I’ve heard this saying for years …that you can’t out-train a bad diet. I have to admit, it’s one of my least favorite sayings. I mean — why can’t I exercise and have the body I want AND eat what I want? After-all, I work very very hard. I am running so fast and so hard on the treadmill, I don’t have time to read a magazine or a kindle. I don’t have time to check my phone for texts and messages. I’m more likely to accidentally pee myself because I’m pushing myself to run faster and harder ( I crank my speed up to a six minute mile). I lift weights and do strength training and do all the things I’m supposed to do to stay healthy … but … I like dessert, and red wine and the occasional hot wing.

So, I wonder … do you all do the same thing and then wonder why you aren’t losing weight or having your figure change? Do you do that one cheat day a week where you blow an entire week of hard work for a cupcake and 10 hot wings (or better yet … pizza)? Can you really blow a week with one awesomely delicious meal? Yes. The answer is yes.

I follow a trainer in town on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CarltonCullins.BlueSkyStrongboxLLC) and last week he asked for video topics — and he picked my topic to talk about … the dreaded statement of how you can’t out-train a bad diet. So, if you want to hear from an expert vs. a personal experience — watch this video and let me know what you think! He’s a quirky dude with lotsa facial hair but he’s so positive and full of life. And here’s my personal story. Last summer, my hubby and I went on a Caribbean vacation to Turks and Caicos– just the two of us. It had been eleven years since we took a vacation that didn’t involve friends or family or our lovely children. My goal for the trip was to wear a bikini and have my abdominal muscles show — and not have that little piece of fat hang over my bottoms. So, I was relentless — I met with a trainer who I immediately loved and connected with and joined his TeamFIT program at Lifetime.   And for once, I did exactly what my trainer told me to do.   He called it — phase one (and I never made it to phase two).  Anyway — I ate every two hours — a lean protein with a vegetable. I cut out lattes and dessert and sugar and booze and added in cups and cups of spinach (after all, I could have as much veggie as I wanted). I ate clean and healthy Monday-Friday.  And (get this)… I felt better! I slept better! I looked better! I followed his plan for clean eating for almost nine weeks. My scale weight didn’t change AT ALL — and it sucked. I really wanted to see that number change but you could visibly see the change in my body and my body fat percentage changed (a little).  My hubby took a pic of me in my bikini and posted it to Instagram and one person asked if I had lipo.  I’m pretty certain phase two of his plan meant I had to follow his dietary plan 7 days a week vs. 5.

And then on vacation, I drank what I wanted — alcohol for breakfast? I think so! I ate what I wanted and as often as I wanted and really, I was sleeping fine, but that could have been sun or alcohol induced. And by the end of our five night trip … my abs were only visible if I was sucking in. And that roll of fat? It was back. And then I got used to eating toast for breakfast and having juice and sandwiches for lunch … and it was so very hard to eat the way I knew I should when we got back.  And can you believe I lost all that tone in just five days of eating whatever I wanted?   It’s why clean eating is a lifestyle change — it has to be permanent … or it’s one big waste of time!

So, we’re week three into the new year and most people I know have losing weight or getting healthy on their list of resolutions and I wonder …how is it going? Are you working out really hard but still eating whatever you want? Are you still viewing it as a temporary diet and not a lifestyle change? I’m back on the plan of clean eating because I felt so much better! And even though I miss my red wine and Saturday night hot wings … I’m already sleeping better.

I googled clean eating and there’s about 1 billion websites to peruse … and then I found this little gem!
