20130920-072141.jpgEver noticed that there simply never seems to be enough space around the home? Chances are that even if you moved to a new home double the size of your existing one that it would seem spacious for about a week before the old problem of not having enough space would come back to haunt you. Given this scenario, you can either continue to upgrade to larger premises every few months, which is not particularly practical or feasible, or you can stay where you are make the most of your existing space.

The first step to maximizing your existing space is to go from room to room and gather all the items that you no longer need – a spring clean does not have to be performed only in spring. You would be surprised how many peripheral items you compile and how quickly you do so. Once that task is complete, sort them into plies for trash, donations, and perhaps even for sale or a garage sale. This should create some much needed space.

Follow up your “spring” clean with a transfer of your record, tape, or compact disc collection to digital format. You can literally create an enormous amount of space very quickly by transferring all this data to an MP3 player, hard disc drive, or other similar device. The additional convenience of storing it in these formats is a bonus.

Once you have finished with your music, get started on your books. These are even bulkier and take up more storage. How many e-Books can you fit on a tablet or other such device and how many shelves can you free up or boxes remove from under your feet?

Space saving is not limited to inside the house though and neither are the solutions. If you have a yard, outdoor storage is a fantastic idea. Deck boxes and plastic sheds can be used to store virtually everything. They are immune to the elements so you don’t have to worry about your items, come in a range of colors to suit any house, are easy to assemble (if they require assembly at all, and are relatively inexpensive.

Once you incorporate these tips you may find that the thought of downsizing springs to mind. Save that thought because it is much easier to clean and clear a house than what it is to change the very human trait of acquiring and hoarding.
