Newsflash: Valentine’s Day is THIS Friday.  I’ve been planning Valentine’s day in my head for two months now.  Of course, life happens, and we’ve been totally off schedule and out of whack due to all of these crazy “snow” days in Austin, so I am completely behind on everything.  Fortunately, I have a couple of super easy, super affordable, and super cute DIY’s, for decorating and for gifting, tucked away in my back pocket!

So, if you’re anything like me – have no fear!  For just a few bucks and not much time, you can add some fun Valentine’s Day decor to your pad, and have a cute Valentine for yourself or your kiddo to share.

Decorating with Light.

Valentine's FrameOver Christmas this year, I was pinspired to do a “light tree” on my wall instead of dealing with a toddler pulling ornaments off of a real tree.

Christmas Light Tree

I fell in love with the white lights on the wall – it gives such a nice glow/light effect, so I decided to re-purpose this for Valentine’s Day decor.

What you need:

A strand of white twinkle Christmas Lights

Command mini hooks, or clear push pins

Red paper heart, glitter heart, or printable with a “Love” quote

Directions:

Decide what shape you want your “frame”.  I just went with standard rectangle shaped frame.  Using 4 pushpins, create the outline of the frame.  Continue going around (using 4 pushpins or command mini hooks) for each outline.  A friend of mine suggested a heart shape for the lights, which would be really cute!  Once your frame is complete, pin up a Valentine’s day picture, shape, or printable.  Easy, peasy.  I took me about 5 minutes to get the entire thing up, didn’t cost me anything since I already had all of the components.  I’m considering leaving the frame up all of the time and just switching out the inside.

Paint Chip Bookmark

Another idea I found on a google search for easy Valentine’s ideas.  Head to your local hardware store and pick up a handful of paint chip strips.  You can stick with your typical Valentine’s Day color swatches, or switch it up and get a few of each of the brighter colors.

What you need:

Paint Chip (strip) for each Bookmark

Single Hole Punch

Ribbon

Small shape hole punch

Marker or Pen

Directions:

Punch a single hole in the top center of each paint strip.  Thread an approximately 4″ piece of ribbon through the hole and tie a knot.  Next, using your shaped hole punch, randomly punch a shape into one or more of the color squares.  You can do one punch per card, or more – it’s up to you!  That part is just for decoration.  Finally, write a Valentine’s Day Message on the back – a cute one like “Your wrote the BOOK on being cool!” would be fun for a school exchange.

Voila!  There you have it – a couple of super simple DIY’s for those of you who may (or may not) have procrastinated on your Valentine’s day plans!  What are some of your favorite ways to decorate in a pinch – and on a budget?
