Well… I did it! I successfully didn’t buy one item of clothing for myself for 3 months.

Why did I do it? No big reason. I always like a good challenge and my husband Alex and I are trying to save money for house renovations so what better way to jump start our savings than not allowing me to go to the mall.  I once did a similar challenge in college, but instead I was only allowed to shop second hand for one year. I did it and loved it! I fell in love with vintage clothing and it actually led me to start my own vintage clothing store while in school.

I joined my friend, Kelsey on January 1st for a 90 day no shopping challenge.  It honestly wasn’t that hard, but that might have to do with the fact that I still shopped for my son as well as home decor for our new house.  I know from personal experience that shopping can be quite addicting and it scientifically can make one happy. So for me purchasing anything other than groceries brings me enjoyment (okay maybe not new tires).  Shopping has always been a hobby of mine and can instantly put me in a good mood.  I can walk into most stores, and find something I want to buy. That is very dangerous for my bank account, but I’m also not a compulsive shopper.  I think wisely about my purchases and rarely make impulse purchases unless it’s on major sale or for my son. You know how it goes when you’re in Target…”Oh, look at this tiny baby hat. My kid will look so cute in it, and it’s only $8. Why not?!”

A peak into my closet

Before I began this 90 day challenge, I was bargain shopping way too often.  Basically, I was getting great deals on clothing, 70-80% off, but I didn’t need them.  I was becoming enthralled by the sale. “These Gap jeans are only $10! I already have a similar pair, but this is a steal.”  So began my bargain shopping spiral of doom.

During the challenge I definitely had moments in stores where I had to tell myself, “Walk away Jesse. Walk away.” First world problems, I know. But, in that moment, I realized I had the discipline and strength to let go (thanks to the challenge).  To let go of wanting more. I’m always wanting more. More clothes, more money, more things.

My closet was still full the entire three months.  I even did a small purge and gave away a few items that I knew I wouldn’t wear again.  I simplified.  During the challenge I did spot a few new items I wanted, but then thought about how they would really play in to my current wardrobe and how versatile they would be.  When I enter back into the world of shopping, I will know exactly what I’m looking for.  I can tell you that I will shop again, that is for sure.  However, I am more aware of my habits, specifically with bargain shopping.

I love Caitlin’s words of wisdom below when it comes to no shopping. I think #4 is the biggest challenge for myself.

No shopping challenge

Have you ever participated in a no shopping challenge or put any type of restrictions on your purchasing? What did you learn? Any tips?
