As a Northern California native, Texas gets pretty HOT! I remember not wanting to leave the house during my first summer in Austin. I was very grateful for air conditioning that summer! Fast forward 9 years, I love the heat! I definitely don’t shy away from enjoying summer.  In fact, now I find that many others complain about the temperature more than I do!

Tips on staying COOL this summer:

Get out EARLY!

My children and I love being outside, but when it’s 100 degrees, that’s hard to do.  We are early risers and often spend our mornings going for walks, bike rides, and visiting playgrounds.  It’s so much cooler in the morning!

Get WET!

One of the great things about the heat is that we can enjoy splash pads, pools and lakes without freezing! Take advantage of the heat and get out there and discover a new favorite place to get wet. There are a lot of public pools and splash pads. Two of our favorites are Wilco’s Quarry Splash Pad and Veteran’s Memorial Pool.  Another exciting option is Hawaiian Falls, opening this summer!  Being from North Austin, these are the areas I am most familiar with, however Austin has a great list of public pools and splash pads.
Austin Moms Blog, Katie Eaton, shared her favorite natural springs and pools.  I’m not that adventurous yet! My kids are still mastering their swimming skills!

A 3 hour drive North, you’ll find Great Wolf Lodge, one of my family’s favorite mini vacation destination. It has a great indoor water park and in the summer time, the outdoor section is opened up. It’s great for all age groups and provides lots of kid friendly activities. You really have no reason to leave the property! (It’s especially fun in the Winter, when it’s too cold to go outside.)

Take it INDOORS!

Occasionally, we enjoy staying home and having fun indoors.  We love to do arts and crafts, experiments, cook, bake, write letters, play games, and yes my kids love electronics, which usually means I can clean.
Austin is full of great indoor activities to visit also.  Check your local library for story time and other activities. Another way to get the wiggles out is to visit an indoor playground or inflatable playground. Local movie theaters often have summer freebies. Alamo Draft House offers weekly free movies all year.

Eat Yummy COLD TREATS!

Visit a local ice cream or frozen yogurt shop to cool off.  My family and I love making homemade ice cream and popsicles.
One of our family traditions is a summer list. We create the list early in summer and mark off what we do throughout summer. It’s a nice way to mix up our activities during the summer. We add fun and frugal tasks and my kids wake up asking, “Mom, what are we going to cross off the list today?”  Keep it fun! Enjoy your kids this summer!

As a school teacher, I am elated that Summer is officially here! Does your family have a favorite pool, splash pad or lake?  I know there are so many great ones out there.
