Don’tcha just love the cooler weather of fall and all the outside exploring it lends itself to? I know we do. Ah, to be outside after 9 a.m. and not be drenched in sweat. It really is the little things.

The little boy and I needed some weekday fun so after pre-school we went on a playground scouting mission. We kinda knew where we were going, thanks to Google Maps, but we didn’t have Siri giving us step-by-step directions so it was still a little adventurey.

Our destination: Round Rock Memorial Park

We had seen it from the I-35 and the playscape looked good. Thus the adventure. We were not disappointed! Especially for being tucked in somewhat below the interstate, this was a good little park.

There are swings (baby and big kid), slides, monkey bars, a faux-rock climbing thing and two pieces to the playscape. Underneath the faux-rock thing, it feels like you are in a cave, a feeling completed by the dinosaur fossil pattern in the plastic.

There are also some pretty big steps from the parking lot to the playscapes so if you are bringing a tiny one like I was, don’t let them run right from the car. Either carry them down the steps or do some serious hand holding.

Also around the park, benches, picnic tables and lots of shade trees. Through the center runs Brushy Creek which on our visit was being home to ducks. (“Duck! Duck! Duck!”)

Ducks, slides and playscapes aside, I also liked the memorial part of this park. It included several plaques honoring WWII veterans and a submarine torpedo.

Yes, my toddler is too young to even slightly comprehend it. But I like the idea of sharing history with him now and always (I majored in US history in college). Hopefully learning about and honoring history will be normal for him as he grows up. And if occasionally it also includes a playground, all that much better.
