As a mom who works for a growing tech startup, it’s hard enough to make time for inside household chores, let alone outdoor yard work. So when I heard about an Austin tech startup called LawnStarter from I jumped at the chance to try it out.  Essentially they make it possible to order lawn care online hassle free.

So far, LawnStarter has saved me so many headaches, and has become a huge addition to keeping my house looking great. Their website is easy to use, I get email/text updates whenever there are delays, and the customer support is faster than anything I’ve seen – even faster than my son coming up with excuses to not mow the lawn!

Their website / mobile app, which is reminiscent of Uber or Handy, is super convenient.  And like many new companies, LawnStarter offers a “give $25, get $25” incentive, where referring a friend gets you both $25 towards service.

A week ago, I got an email from their CEO Steve saying that they were upping the referral bounty to $50 per referral, so with the weather warming up, I figured this was a great time to spread the word about this great company.  Of course I’d save myself a bit of money in the process.

First, I shared on the usual mediums, Facebook and Twitter.  That night I got 5 referrals from just my friends alone.  I also made sure to post it again a couple days later in case anybody else had missed it.  I think my total from social media was 8 referrals, not a bad way to make $400 🙂

Then came the real deal: the neighborhood listserv.  Over the years this has been everyone’s go-to place to find service recommendations.  The credits are still rolling in, but I think I’m at a total of 10 referrals from one post on my neighborhood group – that may have been the easiest $500 I’ve ever made.

Between social media and the neighborhood groups, and telling a few moms during Wine night and day care pickup, I’ve earned over $1,000 towards lawn care!

And if you’re thinking that I’m just taking advantage of the system, I actually received a call from LawnStarter thanking me for spreading the word and asking me to write this post.  They are simply a great company to work with.
