Before moving to the Austin area from Olympia, Washington in 2008, my son Jimmy never had environmental allergies. But once we arrived, that all changed. Suddenly, Jimmy started sounding very congested all the time. He would cough a lot and we joked that he sounded like Darth Vader because his breathing was so wheezy. He often had a runny nose, so much so that I had to regularly send packages of tissue to school to keep his classroom stocked. We tried over-the-counter allergy medications, but nothing seemed to touch his persistent congestion.

Finally, when his breathing became so bad that I was starting to get really concerned, I took Jimmy to see a highly recommended pediatric allergist. This doctor ran all the standard environmental blood tests, and Jimmy came back off the charts allergic to almost everything. The single highest allergen was cats, which we have two of, but Jimmy had grown up around these two cats, so I had a hard time understanding why he was only now showing signs of being allergic to them. Regardless, we needed to treat his allergies.

An important part of the story is the reason why we moved to Austin in the first place – for improved autism services for my son. Jimmy is severely affected by autism such that he’s completely non-verbal and often has severe outbursts. We wanted him to have the best care possible, and moving to Austin would give him better access to both doctors and therapists, as well as the school system. The pediatric allergist said that since Jimmy was non-verbal and therefore couldn’t tell us whether he was having a reaction, allergy shots weren’t an option for him. The doctor advised us to get rid of our cats and come back to see him in a year, end of story.

Around this same time, my (ex) mother-in-law heard a radio commercial for Texan Allergy. She knew I was very distraught over the prognosis and recommendations we’d been given by the pediatric allergist. I couldn’t bear to get rid of my cats – they’re part of our family! She told me what she’d heard about Texan Allergy, and I called to schedule Jimmy’s appointment. I figured getting a second opinion couldn’t hurt.

Fast forward two years, and I am SO thankful my (ex) mother-in-law heard that Texan Allergy radio commercial, and that I took Jimmy for that initial appointment! The doctor at Texan Allergy recommended allergy drops for Jimmy, and he’s been on them ever since. I can’t say enough good things about these allergy drops – they have literally changed our lives. Jimmy no longer has any of his previous congestion symptoms; his breathing is normal, his nose no longer runs, and he no longer has a persistent cough.

He is back to how he was when we lived in Olympia – no apparent environmental allergies. Best of all, the drops have been so easy. He takes two drops in the morning and one at bedtime, and that’s it. No muss, no fuss. When he’s close to running out of drops, I simply call Texan Allergy and they mail me a refill. It’s so much easier, far less hassle, and more convenient than going into a doctor’s office weekly for allergy shots.

Also, it’s far less invasive and traumatic for a child to take sublingual (under the tongue) drops at home than to have to go to a clinic and be given painful shots. Jimmy has never had any side effects from the drops, has no issue with taking them, and his life is greatly improved from them. Not to mention, we didn’t have to get rid of our beloved cats! Jimmy often sleeps with them right on his pillow and has zero allergic reaction to them. It is amazing!

At our last follow-up appointment with Texan Allergy in June, we were told that after completing this upcoming third year of the allergy drop treatment, Jimmy will be retested for his allergies. If he comes up negative for being allergic, he will be done with the drop treatment. It’s that simple – three years of drops and then his allergies are gone!
