We recently had family photos taken by the amazing Laura Morsman and I have been on the hunt for a sign to make our picture wall complete.

Well, I should have known better than to spend hours looking for the “perfect” sign that didn’t exist or was ridiculously overpriced. So, off to Home Depot we went to make our own DIY rustic sign under $40!

Tools:

  • drill
  • wrench
  • nail gun or hammer

Shopping List:

  • Letters purchased from any craft store. Tip:: be sure and check store apps for coupons, I was able to save 50% off my purchase
  • 4-  1×4 furing strips cut down to 58”
  • 1 piece of scrap wood
  • Rust-Oleum Spray Paint in Heirloom White
  • Wood Glue
  • MinWax Pre- Stain (optional)
  • Brush to stain wood
  • Rust-Oleum Wood Stain. We chose Special Walnut for this project because we already had it from a previous project
  • Screws to nail scrap wood. The size of screws will depend on the thickness of the scrap wood you purchase. Just ask a sales associate to help you out if needed.
  • Hex Lag Screws- 3/8”x 1” size
  • Flat Washers- 5/16” sizeIMG_0859

Step 1:

Spray paint the letters with Rust-Oleum Heirloom White.

Step 2:

While the letters are drying, you can glue the wood pieces together and get it ready to stain. We used wood glue and a nail gun to attach scrap 1×2’s to the back of the four pieces of wood.

Step 3:

My husband swears by conditioning the wood before applying the stain. So, we applied a thin coat or MinWax Pre- Stain.

Step 5:

After the wood is completely dry, you can play around with the letter placement to your liking. We used Gorilla Glue Epoxy to attach the letters to the wood. Let dry.

Step 6:

To add an industrial touch, pre drill a hole where you want the screw to go. Add a washer over the hole and tighten the screw down with a wrench.IMG_1138

Step 7:

We roughed up the edges with some sand paper and here is our new family sign. Now,my husband I just need to hang it on the wall.
