If you are like me, every year you struggle searching for things other than candy to put into your kiddos Easter basket. And not only the dang basket, but those little eggs that kids LOVE opening so much that there is YouTube channel dedicated to videos of some guy opening them. Oh, you’ve never heard of the “Egg Surprises” YouTube videos? Lucky you!

The thought of my kid digging into a basket full of chocolate at 7a.m. makes me instantly want to take a nap, so I try really hard for there to be as little candy as possible in the basket. This year I am going to try and help you out. Here are some great ideas (mostly non-candy) for those baskets this year.

  1. All about books basket. Use an actual basket or a backpack. Get some new books and maybe a stuffed character out of the books to go with them. Stick a few fun filled eggs in there with it for good measure.
  2. Little gardner basket. I am actually doing this one this year. Grab a cute little mini plastic wagon. Fill it with a watering can, gloves, a little shovel and some seed packets. I am going to fill a few  eggs with some plastic bugs and marshmallows.
  3. Beach-combing basket. Grab a beach pail and stick some sand toys in there. You can find sets of this stuff at most stores this time of year.
  4. Movie basket. Get a popcorn bucket and fill it with movie snacks and a gift card to your favorite theater. This one is great for younger and older kids.
  5. Outside play basket. Grab some bubbles, chalk, hula hoop, jump rope, basketball, football, an outside game like horseshoes and then put in some filler candy. This is actually one of the Easter baskets I received that I loved and still remember vividly. I’m old, I shouldn’t still remember that. It was that awesome.
  6. Dress up basket. Pick your littles favorite Princess or Superhero and get some dress up props that pertain to them. Stick them in that basket and voila!
  7. Make-up basket. Ok, so this could pertain to little or older girls. Nail polish, pretend or real make up items, chapstick, a cute little pocket mirror, perfume, and a little makeup bag. You know you have an old Clinique free gift bag under your sink. Do it.
  8. Bath fun basket. Bath fizzies, bath chalk, bath paint, those little capsules with the tiny sponges in them and a new fun soap. As much as this sounds like a girl basket, I know darn well my boy would be thrilled with this one too.
  9. Art basket. New coloring books, crayons, markers, paint and colored pencils. Plus, they are making some pretty awesome adult coloring books these days. Pair that with a new set of markers and this works for the older kiddos.
  10. Character basket. What is the one cartoon your kid loves? or character? Mickey, Ninja Turtles, Minecraft, My Little Ponies, Shopkins, Paw Patrol. Base a basket on that character. And I can tell you that Target’s Dollar Spot (I LOVE THAT SECTION) has so much stuff based on those favorite characters.

I hope these ideas help you ladies. If all else fails just fill that sucker with all the leftover candy you still have hidden in your pantry from Halloween and Christmas. Who’s gonna know?
