Halloween

We’re big fans of themed food at our house and Halloween offers me and my little foodies the opportunity to go happily overboard on the silly snacks.

Here are a few incredibly easy Halloween treats you can pack in your kids’ lunch or enjoy making and eating together:

Halloween

Pizza Spiders

What you need:

  • English muffins
  • Pizza sauce
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Large ripe black olives

What you do:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Slice your English muffins in half lengthwise to create two flatbreads. Top each flatbread with your favorite pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. Slice and arrange your olives on top to create the spiders and then place in the oven to bake for about 8 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden. Remove, let cool and serve. (As you can see, our spider legs went a little rogue when exposed to the heat, so you can always add the olives after you take the pizza out of the oven. We enjoyed our arachnids warm.)

clementine-jackolanterns

Clementine Jack-o-Lanterns

What you need:

  • Clementines
  • Black Sharpie

What you do:

  • Draw two small triangle eyes and a crooked smile or get creative and draw your own emojis.

witch-brooms-and-hats

Chocolate Witch Hats and Brooms

What you need:

  • Individually wrapped miniature REESE’S peanut butter cups
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Chocolate cookies (we used Keebler’s Fudge Stripes, but any cookie with a chocolate-covered bottom, like Thin Mints, would work well for this)
  • Milk or dark chocolate Hershey’s kisses
  • Gel frosting (we used orange but green or purple work nicely, too)

What you do:

  • For the brooms: Unwrapped your peanut butter cups, flip them upside down on a plate and place a pretzel stick in the middle to form a broom.
  • For the hats: Place a cookie on a plate, chocolate-covered side up and place an unwrapped chocolate Hershey’s kiss in the center. Trace the kiss with frosting for a little pop of color. Serve brooms and hats side by side.

sausage-mummies

Sausage Mummies

What you need:

  • Your favorite fully cooked sausage links (we used turkey kielbasa)
  • Crescent roll dough
  • Small sugar eyeballs
  • Pizza cutter
  • Baking sheet

What you do:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Unroll crescent dough and use pizza cutter to cut lengthwise into long strips. Wrap strips of dough irregularly around each of your sausages, starting at the top and making your way to the bottom, leaving a tiny bit of space in between at least one rotation so you can tuck the eyeballs in later. Each link may require more than one strip of dough. If so, squeeze the ends together to connect dough. Place mummies a few inches apart on a baking sheet in the oven for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove, let cool and tuck two sugar eyeballs in between an open area of dough before serving.

ghosts

String cheese Spirits or Banana Ghosts

What you need:

  • String cheese or bananas
  • Black Sharpie

What you do:

  • For the string cheese spirits: Use a black Sharpie to draw on the plastic packaging. (Two small ovals for eyes and one large circle mouth to convey an open-mouthed moan.) Peel plastic down and eat as usual.
  • For the banana ghosts: Similar to the string cheese spirits, use a black Sharpie to draw eyes and a mouth on the banana peel. Peel and eat as usual.

halloween-fruit-kabobs

Halloween Fruit Kabobs

What you need:

  • Blackberries
  • Cheddar cheese squares (cantaloupe or mango are good options, too)
  • Bamboo skewers

What you do:

  • Alternate between adding the blackberries and squares of choice onto your skewers. Appreciate the simplicity of such a simple orange and black snack.

What are you favorite Halloween treats to make with kids?
