Beat Cold & Flu Season Naturally

Believe it or not, we are just starting to get into a cooler weather pattern and with cooler weather comes Cold & Flu Season. In the last week we’ve battled croup, green gunk from all 3 littles, and a stomach virus… and it’s only the start with it being the beginning of November. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the average child catches 6-10 colds per year. That’s a TON of sick days!

Here are some things you can do now to help keep everyone healthy as the cold and flu season rears its ugly head.

Wash your hands ::

We’ve got 1 kid who obsessively washes his hands and another who lies to us about having washed his hands. It’s a constant uphill battle to make sure our little tyke is practicing good hygiene to help keep everyone else in the home healthy. And with a 6 month old, that’s super important. The CDC recommends washing hands for 20 seconds. I was taught a long time ago that if you sing the “Happy Birthday” song, 20 seconds is up. It’s a fun way to make sure the kiddos are properly washing their hands. Hand sanitizer doesn’t kill all germs, but is a good alternative when you’re out and about and good ‘ole soap and water isn’t available.

Stay hydrated ::

We’re pretty lucky in our family since our kids only drink water, but for a lot of families, this can be a challenge. Staying hydrated is key component to staying healthy, especially during cold & flu season! Sugary juice drinks can actually dehydrate you so try to get in water as much as possible!

So, how much water should your kid be drinking? Nutrition.gov recommends:

  • 5 glasses for children ages 5-8
  • 7 glasses for children ages 9-12
  • 8 to 10 glasses for children ages 13+

Blow your nose ::

Gross, I know…but just do it! Blowing your nose helps keep your nasal passages clear, which in turn, keeps you healthier! WebMD explains that it’s important to clear out your nose so you don’t keep mucus in your head that can become infected.

Try natural remedies ::

There is no cure for the common cold, but trying out natural remedies is one way to help you feel better. {Consult a medical professional before using any new products and please be sure to read and follow label directions carefully.} Hyland’s is the oldest manufacturer of homeopathic medicines in the United States and they truly believe the body can call upon its own natural defenses to heal and restore balance. With Costco Mom Hour just around the corner, we were so excited to find out that Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold n’ Cough Day and Night Combo Pack is being sold exclusively at Costco this cold and flu season. It provides natural relief of common cold symptoms in children, including coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose, and nasal and chest congestion, and it is made with natural ingredients, free of artificial color and flavors, and there are no stimulant side effects. Something us Austinites all look for! I definitely plan on stocking up on a few combo packs at the Costco Mom Hour event this coming Friday, so whenever those inevitable 6-10 colds make their way into my household this season … I’ll be armed and ready!
