miss breastfeeding

I know what you’re thinking, but don’t curse me just yet. You’re going to miss breastfeeding. It’s true that in the early days of breastfeeding it’s hard to ever imagine that you’ll one day miss it. You won’t miss the chapped nipples, issues with latching, and especially the mastitis. I know because I had them all.

One week into breastfeeding I remember sitting on the couch sobbing in pain as my child tried to get nourishment. I wanted to end right then but thankfully did not. With support from my husband and a great lactation consultant we nursed for fourteen months. Guess what, years later I still miss it. No one tells you that. You’ll hear how great it is for you and your baby and a variety of other things, because of course society has all sorts of opinions, but no one tells you that you’ll miss it.

What is there to miss you ask? I miss the connection. I miss the calm that would wash over not only my son but myself. I miss that rush. Was it endorphins or maybe oxytocin? Nope, it was pure love. It is an indescribable feeling that every mother knows. It sneaks up on you, especially in those wee small hours of the morning.

So this week when your babe seems to be feeding every hour, do me a favor. Cherish those nursing sessions. Don’t rush it because you’re on a schedule. Hold them close or play to their crazy moods (if you’re like me and have a contortionist). This particular connection is fleeting and so precious.

I promise sweet momma, that one day, you’re going to miss this. You’re going to wish these time be it days, weeks, months, or years hadn’t gone by so fast. So in the midst of this crazy world and your hectic day take a moment to breathe your nursing babe in and relish every moment.
