fall style

Fall in Texas has got to be the most welcomed season of the year. After a long, hot and humid summer, nearly everyone is looking out for those first crisp cool signs of Fall. Although the change in weather is loved and looked forward to, it’s a tricky time around these parts: 80-degree temps lingering far too long, hurricane season causing concern, 40-degree shifts within a few hours, and just a general unpredictability that even our favorite meteorologists fail to get right.

Our fave stores and shops ring in the new season, too, and it’s a festive celebration of smells, textures, and hue. Walk in your local Target and feast those senses on pumpkin spice lattes, fall-scented candles, and a variety of covet-worthy sweaters and cords in gorgeous shades of autumn. Unfortunately, dressing in full Fall regalia around Austin will leave ya sweating bullets most days!

So, here are my top Fall style hacks to dress seasonally and still feel festive:

  1. Build a hat collection: Hats are my go-to accessory these days…they elevate a look while covering up second-day hair. Plus, they shield from the sun’s hot rays and keep your head protected against the elements, so they’re perfect for extreme swings in weather. Sometimes I feel a little ridiculous when I first put one on, but they almost always generate a compliment when I’m out and about. Felt cowgirl hats, suede baseball caps, and beanies topped with a faux fur puff are so on-trend right now.

  2. Scarves in Fall colors: Scarves are another awesome accessory option right now because they look like fall but can go over the most breezy of tanks. Steer clear of 100% wool — in my experience those can get itchy around the neck in days over 40-degrees. Look for a billowy, lightweight scarves in deeper seasonal shades to top off your look. Love ’em layered over sleeveless dresses and paired with statement earrings & cowboy boots.

  3. Opt for vests as your outerwear of choice: Coats are another thing flooding the racks at clothing stores right now. –Ugh, honestly we won’t even need one until December, right? If I need just a little something to keep warm in the a.m., adding a vest is super-functional and stylish. I’m drawn to all the vest types you can find at retail right now: puffer, ranch-style with faux shearling trim, utility in an army green, and elongated suiting separates.

  4. Be a chameleon & just change colors: Simply refreshing the shade of your normal basics is a simple way to ease into the new time of year. This is a fitting approach to embracing fall trends for those who are more “just jeans & a T-shirt” types. Trade out the hue of your nail polish, tees, and lip/eye color for the current shades of the season. This autumn, I’m very attracted to mustard yellow, dusty blush, and dark bordeaux. Now is when I push neon, Easter pastels, and bright florals to the back of the closet.
