no elf

No to the Elf

There are a lot of things about Christmas I love. As soon as Thanksgiving is over I fall somewhere between Buddy the Elf and a Who from Whoville. My halls are decked as much as they can be and we always get a real tree. But there is one thing I won’t do…The Elf on the Shelf.

To be fair before the comments come in, I don’t even know the story about it.  I know there is an Elf that is somehow supposed to be magic (even though you can find one in any store you go in), that has to be moved, and that you can’t touch for some reason and some kind of spying is involved. I don’t know all the details but I can tell you, I don’t really care because I’m just not down.

There just isn’t anything about it that intrigues or interests me. It’s not the inconvenience of it, it’s just that it’s not what I want for Christmas. Christmas is about magic, love, kindness, and giving. Children make Christmas more magical, and as much fun as the Elf might be for some, I don’t want our children to feel like they are under scrutiny. I want to take this season to stop and appreciate our son and soak up every moment with him. That’s why I say no to the Elf.

Just like the Whos, we need to understand that Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe it means a little bit more.
