Make Your Own Elderberry Syrup

Ok, I already know you’re thinking “Alright hippie mom, tell me how your secret potion is gonna cure my kids cedar fever.” Girl, I wish I had the answer also. I don’t consider myself a hippie mom, I feel like I’m somewhere in between crunchy and conventional, so we’ll just call me “creamy.” Like, I’m a, I don’t vaccinate my kid (save it sanctimommies), but he eats Chick-fil-a sometimes kind of mom.

With that being said, I really do prefer to let the body of my little human learn to fight off illness naturally, and I work hard to intentionally build the immune systems of said little human. Extended breastfeeding, daily green smoothies, tons of outdoor and active play, limited sugar, probiotics and of course, elderberry.  When given daily, elderberry syrup can drastically help fight infection, prevent illness and support overall wellness. Elderberries are a rich source of vitamins A and C, which are crucial in helping the body maintain optimal health. Plus, the bioflavonoids in elderberry syrup boost the body’s immune system by increasing antioxidant levels and viruses that damage cell walls.

So, yeah, it’s that good-ish. And I’m about to teach you how to make it at home.

Make Your Own Elderberry Syrup

Here is your recipe:

  1. 2/3 cup Dried elderberries
  2. 1 TBSP Fresh cloves
  3. 2 TBSP Ground ginger
  4. 1 TSP cinnamon
  5. 1 cup local honey
  6. 5 cups of filtered water (we use a Berkey)

Here are your steps (I’ve included pictures for you visual learners)

  1. Bring 5 cups of filtered water to a boil
  2. Add elderberries, ginger, cloves and cinnamon
  3. Bring to a simmer and cover for 40 minutes
  4. Remove from heat and let cool
  5. Using the backside of a large spoon, spend at least 10 minutes smashing the elderberries
  6. Strain mixture
  7. Discard elderberries
  8. Add in 1 cup of honey and whisk for at least 5 minutes
  9. Pour into glass jar and seal.
  10. Keep refridgerated

The dosing we use at our home is 1 TSP daily for immunity and 2 TSP daily when ill.

Happy potion making!
