Hi there, I’m Marisa Olsen and I’ve been doing the mom thing for 4 years now. By no means an expert, but I found my groove…for this stage at least. When I was pregnant with my first, my daughter, someone asked me if I knew what kind of parent I was going to be. The question totally threw me. How could I? I’ve never done this before. I didn’t know what I would be like because I didn’t know what they would be like. I had to meet them, learn them, and build a relationship with them as an individual.

My daughter has been fiercely independent since the day she took off crawling. She’s is nonstop action with a DIY personality. It’s best to stay out of her way until she asks you for help (I have no idea where she gets it from). My son, on the other hand, wants nothing more than one on one interaction. He has made it a point to break the stereotype that second children are often lost in the shuffle. He doesn’t think he’s close enough to you until he is literally sitting on top of you and even then he’ll try to scoot closer. Hugging is his favorite hobby and his first full sentence was I-la-u!

My only intention going into motherhood was to get to know these new little people, love and protect them the best way I know how and provide them with a safe, nurturing space to grow into themselves. The only other expectation I set for myself was expose them to adventure.
So when the opportunity to relocate for work presented itself this past October my husband and I jumped at it. We packed up our lives and kids and headed out on an adventure.

Originally from South Florida, we have only been here for a few months. This wasn’t exactly a blind move though. In 2013 my husband (then boyfriend) and I came to Austin on vacation and fell in love with the city, so much so that we came back at the end of that same year and eloped! Since then we have had our eyes (and hearts) set on making Austin our home.

Being new to the area I spend most of my non-working hours trying to settle into our new life, find our new rhythm, making sure the kids are adjusting, and exploring our new neighborhood. I am a food enthusiast always looking for my next meal, just don’t ever expect me to cook it. And while food is the only hobby I consistently make time for, I’m also a fan of filling my nightstand with books I don’t have time to read, and starting house projects I don’t have time to finish. Life with kids can be hectic but I’m excited about this new adventure and all the experiences we will share as a family.
