It’s been a while (eh hem–a few decades) since I had to stand in front of the classroom to show off my favorite teddy bear, Snuggles. When my kiddo came home with his first Show and Tell notice in his backpack, it didn’t take long for my nostalgia to melt into “oh boy, how am I going to help him come up with something new to bring every week?!”

Here’s a list of the Top 10 BEST Show and Tell Items For Kids to help you keep it fresh and fun:

  1. A Toy- but not THE toy, you know the one! There is always the real risk of belongings getting lost in the shuffle at school, so if it’s something your little can’t live without, it should probably skip Show and Tell. It could be the newest, tried and true, or something that gives your student a lot to chat about.
  2. A Souvenir- She sells seashells then brings them to Show and Tell! Shells, arrowheads, and shark teeth are a few of the things we have collected from our family vacations. Add some photos from the trip and encourage your child to share their favorite memory.
  3. A Favorite Card Trick- If your kiddo sees Show and Tell as their time to SHINE, embrace their performing spirit and help them practice some card/magic tricks at home to get ready for their big moment. Lights…camera…
  4. A Collection- Lego guys? Super heroes? Rocks? Marbles? (do children even collect marbles anymore? Probably not, but you get the idea)
  5. Baby Bro- I’d personally love to be in the audience as my first grader goes over “Tips for Being a Great Big Bro.” Swap big siblings (sweet, early dismissal!) or other family members if needed. Run this by the teacher before making arrangements.
  6. A Pet- This one DEFINITELY needs teacher/school approval.
  7. Art- Do you have a little Picasso at home? Help them pack up their latest work to show off in class. They can discuss the “inspiration” behind the piece and why they chose the colors they chose–or just stand there and look cute and say “look, it’s a blob.”
  8. Sports- You can hit this one from all angles. Favorite sports jersey, an autograph, or a trophy they won with their team.
  9. Mini Me- Help your kiddo gather some baby photos and favorite *old* items to showcase their younger years at Show and Tell. It’ll definitely be super emotional for you to hear them talk about when “they were a baby” (they will ALWAYS be your baby!) and fun for the class to learn more about your student.
  10. Book- It could be their favorite, your favorite (Amelia Bedilia WHO?!) , a new one from the library, or one that the pages are falling out of from being loved on so much. It’s always a bonus when Show and Tell becomes storytime!

Show and Tell is something young students look forward to every week while giving them the opportunity to practice public speaking skills and learn from their peers. *PRO TIP* It’s always a good idea to check in with your child’s teacher to see if there’s an approved list of Show and Tell items. If your little wants to bring his pet anaconda to class, it might require a little more than just an email the morning.
