The highly debated topic of nanny cameras and whether or not it’s appropriate or invasive. It’s typically an opposite end of the spectrum type of discussion. I hardly find anyone with a “gray” area of opinion on the topic itself. Most families have their strong opinions whether for or against them.

Do you think it’s a breach of privacy towards the nanny? Do you feel like your children are safer with them installed? Why are daycare centers allowed to use but when you use them in your own house it’s immediately negative? Should footage be used to confront a nanny if a situation arises and is caught on camera?

With today’s technology, why not take advantage of a nanny camera to ensure your child’s safety and care are the priority. If a camera is used appropriately, in plain sight and without violating your nanny’s trust, I think it’s a resourceful tool. In my opinion, hidden cameras that are not made aware of to the nanny are inappropriate and considered invasive. I try to put myself in the nanny’s shoes and realized it would make me uncomfortable and I would question their trust if I found hidden cameras while I was on the clock.

I truly believe that if you do not one hundred percent trust that person, they should not be watching your child. If you have concerns about your child’s nanny, having a camera in place will not necessarily change your opinion of the person or strengthen your confidence in them.

For our family, we consider the nanny camera as a way of monitoring our child, her day and her schedule. We are not necessarily monitoring our nanny. We fully trust our nanny and do not question her behavior, motives or actions around our daughter.

The positioning of the cameras is an important factor in the nanny’s acceptance of the cameras. The camera we have in our daughter’s room is primarily focused on her crib with only partial views of the rest of her room. It is clearly mounted on the wall above her bed and is very visible. Using the camera above the bed for visibility of sleep patterns is an added bonus. Plus pulling up the camera to find my daughter in hilarious sleeping (or non-sleeping) positions provides lots of laughs for the hubby and me!

Additionally, I feel more connected to my daughter throughout the day having the camera to check in. If I can pull up the camera on my phone and peek on her nap or see her playing for five minutes, I feel comforted knowing she is in good hands and enjoying her day. It also helps me document her ever-changing schedule (can these babes ever stay on schedule!?!) and try to keep our weekends consistent with her weekdays.

Whether or not you believe in using a nanny camera, make sure you fully trust who is supervising your children and do what fits your family in order to have peace of mind.
