Project Nursery: Babying On A Budget
Cribs, rockers, changing tables, books, toys, blankets, diapers, OH MY! Designing a nursery can be overwhelming. There is alot that you need to shove in a room while making it comfortable, relaxing, and functional for your new bundle and yourself. In my profession, I get alot of work designing new living rooms, dining rooms, master bedrooms, etc but my favorite rooms to design are nurseries and kiddo rooms! Recently, I finished to most special of nurseries for the most special of clients, OUR NEW BABY!
I have come up with a quick list to get you started on your project.
Whether you are on a tight budget, up for a DIY challenge, or ballin’ on baby, these simple suggestions will help you get the ball rolling.
- Decide how involved you want to be in the project. Are you up for DIY projects, painting, building, shopping? If so, great! You will have so much fun adding your TLC to the room. If you work full time, feel overwhelmed by the project, or just need a little help, you can call on a specialist like me to help with your project.
- Decide on your budget for the project and create a checklist of things you need for the room. This is SO important in any home project. Without a general guideline, it is way to easy to get carried away and then feel guilty or remorseful when its all said and done.
- Find your inspiration for the room and start a Pinterest page or inspiration board.
This will help keep your ideas organized. - Look around your home to see if you have anything that you can utilize in your new space. An unused dresser or side table. Or perhaps its a piece of art that you want to use as a color palette for your room.
- Finally create a timeline for your project. Set goals for finishing things and check them off the list as you go. Don’t wait until the last minute to buy everything you need. Prioritize and budget for your must have items.
One of my favorite ways to transform a room is with paint!
A new color can turn a room from dull to delicious or from a circus to a calming, relaxing space. Another option if you are working with a lot of sheet rock walls, like we were, is to add some texture with wallpaper or paneling. We chose to add some faux brick AND wallpaper to our space and it completely changed the whole room.
Another way to create a cozy space is to add some old in with the new. We used a game table that we built as our new changing table, we spray painted a metal bed a new color, we added a few Round Top finds to the room, and hid most of the clothes in the closet. But you can easily double any dresser as a changing table. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you will be spending a lot of time in this room so you want to be comfortable as well as have baby comfy.
It is ok to break the rules.
If you love more vibrant colors use them in this room! If you prefer the calm pastel tones than go for that. Create a room that will grow with your little bambino so that you don’t feel that you need to change it in a year or two. But most importantly is HAVE FUN! This is an exciting time for your family. If you fill the room with love, laughter, silliness, keepsakes and memories you will feel all of that when you walk in there and see your little. And even more importantly your little will feel it too!
