Best Venues for Winter Birthday Parties

winter birthday
Ah, wintertime in Austin…wait, can we even call it “winter”?  — Temperatures were in the 80s last week and will be again this week. Either way, it IS officially January, so we’ll take it. But yeah, the post-holiday season in Austin is why many people live here but it can also be kind of a drag: there’s huge unpredictably in terms of weather (hello, 40-degree temp swings overnight), there’s cedar fever sickening even those without regular outdoor allergies, and there’s the general drag of post-Christmas getting back into our ho-hum routines of school & work. Not much to look forward to until Spring Break.

So, what to do and where to do if you want to spark joy in the middle of this icy mix for your little one’s winter birthday?

Here’s a list of my three favorite venues for hosting winter birthday parties:

1. Toybrary Austin: Our local toy-lending library has a new location with a special space just for birthdays! Blow out the birthday candles and then stay and play! Children of all ages and stages are destined to kind something developmentally appropriate to keep them entertained. Party rental includes use of the Toybrary space and enough toys and activities to keep everyone happy. You supply the food; the kids supply their fun. Rates: Members $175 (+ $75 refundable deposit & tax) or Non-Members $225 (+ $75 refundable deposit & tax).

2. Little Land Play Gym:  This Northwest Austin kiddie gym is a favorite of mine — adults can hang off and jump on all of the equipment, too! Parties at Little Land include: 50% off open play voucher for all guests; plates, napkins and plasticware; private party room; open play for attendees; 2 or 3 hours for party (depending on option selected); 15 minutes before/after for setup and cleanup (30 minutes for private parties). Semi-private party rates: up to 6 Kiddos: $179 or up to 12 Kiddos: $229. Private party rates: 2-hour $459 or 3-hour party $549.

3. Catch Air Austin/Round Rock: Bigger than big slides, ultra-vibrant colors, and a lighted dance floor make this venue feel like an epic raging kids dance party. The littles are sure to crash at nap time with candy-coated dreams of psychedelic rides and glow in the dark play. Catch Air parties include: 80 min. of play time and 40 min. party room time, paper products, free drinks for kids (juice or water bottle), an experienced party coordinator, one free pass or gift card for birthday child (depending on location), set up & clean up, slide show dedicated to your child on a large screen, and last but not least: a laser bubble dance & animation show! Rates seem to vary by location, day of week & time, but a quick search revealed rates from $279 (weekend rate for up to 9 people) to $1,000 (private party for up to 27 guests).
