One of my husband’s fondest childhood memories is going to the Frio River so it’s no wonder that for Memorial Day weekend he wanted to make a trip to the tiny town of Leakey, Texas that flourishes during the spring and summer months with tourists making their way to the Hill Country. Lincoln’s God Father is also a Frio River connoisseur so it seemed natural to make this place our 1st annual trip with one of our favorite couples. They don’t have any children yet, but kiddos are definitely on the forefront so we’ve decided that every year our two families will make our way to the Frio for family fun bonding time.

Wesley and I are used to doing everything with Lincoln, but we decided to do the Frio without Lincoln this year for a few reasons. 1. We were looking forward to a kid-less weekend. 2. Lincoln seemed a tad young to float the river. 3. Our couple friend doesn’t have children yet so we didn’t want to spoil their weekend with 7 pm curfews.

We decided to stay at Frio Pecan Farm, which turned out to be the most gorgeous cabins I saw during our trip to the Frio. The cabin was a fully furnished 2 bedroom 2 bathroom cabin looking out into the pecan tree orchard and even had several swing sets and playscapes for the children. We brought coolers of food, snacks, beer, wine, and margaritas. This was truly such a cool place to stay with a swing on the front porch and plenty of quiet neighbors there with children. We found a great spot along the river to pull our truck up to, kept the windows open with music blaring out the windows, set up our lawn chairs along the river, and hung out in the sun and the cold river while tubers and kayakers made their way down the river. We even saw one mother with her 19 month old floating the river… for a brief moment I wished I had brought Lincoln with us so he could have enjoyed all the rock throwing his little heard desired and so we could have started him young with the tradition my husband grew up on. It was {brief} as I relished the sounds of the river and the peace of being able to dive into my book I read over the weekend.

Saturday night we made our way to Concan and danced our hearts away at the House Pasture to Gary P Nunn.

On Sunday the weather was overcast so we attempted to go to Garner State Park {which was subsequently closed due to an overflow of visitors}, went horseback riding through the beautiful Hill Country until the clouds broke up and we made our way back to our private little Frio River spot where we could enjoy our last full day of vacation. I begged to go back to the House Pasture for more dancing Saturday night, but I was out-voted by the rest of the gang and subjected to the yummy fajitas my husband cooked and card games.

We were so anxious to get back to our little man on Monday and left around 9 am, but I seriously could have stayed another one or two days and been perfectly content.

I can’t wait to take Lincoln to the Frio next year. This was seriously one of my favorite trips, was so peaceful, family friendly, and a great tradition to start for any family. Our biggest expense was the cost of the cabin, which split with another couple was less than $300 for 3 nights. Leakey is only a few hours away so it’s easy to get out there on a Friday night and enjoy the entire weekend. We brought all of our own food and drinks, spent nothing to hang out on the river, and we all just enjoyed each others company in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

If you’re ever looking for an easy trip with the family I highly recommend the Frio River! We can’t wait to go back next year with Lincoln and truly make it a family trip.

What family friendly spot do you like to make a vacation? What did you do for the holiday weekend?
