This past summer my husband’s employer unexpectedly transferred him (us) from Denver to Austin. It was quite a surprise, especially because I was almost five months pregnant. The company handled most of the move (thankfully!) but there was no way the two of us and our 4 year old could avoid the 14 hour drive. The drive turned out to be a lot of fun but that’s also when I noticed our SUV was beginning to make a high-pitched squealing noise. It wasn’t all the time, but it did give me pause.

Fast forward four months and I found myself managing a 4 year old, a newborn, and a car with brakes that sounded so bad I was nervous to drive it. I understood we needed new brakes but as newcomers to town I wasn’t thrilled. My husband’s new position took up a lot more time, but how was I supposed to sit in a repair shop for several hours with a preschooler and a baby? Last time I checked most auto shops don’t have a private area for breastfeeding.

Regardless, I knew we couldn’t keep ignoring the problem so I searched online for a brake shop close to home. I started with Yelp because I used that site a lot in Denver. I searched “brake repair” and “Austin” and the first company that came up was Brakes To Go. They had all 5-Star reviews (and well over a hundred of them) so I was curious and did a little research. All the reviews said the prices were excellent, they were honest, polite and fast plus, they come to your home. They come to my home?! Could this really be true? For a mom with two small kids it seemed like a gift from heaven.

I called to get a quote over the phone and to figure out if there was a catch. I thought for sure there would be an added fee for coming to my house, but I was wrong. I explained the noise I was hearing and was given a tentative quote to replace my front brakes. Having only lived in Denver I wasn’t sure what brake repair prices should be in Austin but the quote I got was much lower than I have ever paid for brake service! I asked multiple times if there were extra charges for coming to my home but I was assured the quote was the total price including tax. I booked an appointment for the next morning.

The next day the technician arrived early and by the official appointment time he had already pulled off both front wheels and diagnosed the problem. He offered to explain what needed to be replaced and why, so I let him. His price quote was the same as the estimate I was given, too. The best was that he didn’t try to sell me anything else, something that always seems to happen to me when I take my car to the shop. In fact, the technician later mentioned he inspected my rear brakes and stated they had plenty of life, at least enough to drive another year. I was really impressed with his honesty.

After another 30-40 minutes he was done with everything. I paid him with a credit card while we stood in my driveway, and almost instantly I got an email on my iPhone with my receipt and all my warranty information. The whole process was so easy and quick! I’m really thankful and I’d highly recommend this service to any Austin Mom, as this is a service that just can’t be beat for a busy Mom with little ones. Thanks Brakes to Go!
