Starting October 1st my mood instantly changes. Fall is officially here, the holidays are fast approaching, and I get so excited about beginning our family’s own traditions rather than just living by our families traditions that were created by them. Since last year was our first holiday season in our first house as a family, we decided to have a big Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday rather than actual Turkey day due to my husbands need to hunt over Thanksgiving. I even gave a 2 day menu blog in advance to get our followers excited about their own menu choices! You can check out our menu from last year below…it was delicious by the way!

The plan this year was to be no different than last. Our house would be full of family for our own tradition of Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday night.

……..

And then family members started dropping liking flies, 1 by 1 until there were none left. And thus, we will lose our 2nd annual Thanksgiving Wednesday night tradition and be forced to succumb to our family’s traditions only.

We found out a couple weeks ago that Wesley’s parents wouldn’t be able to make the drive from Bentonville, AR due to a work emergency. Sad? Yes. Big deal? No, I’ll live because our Thanksgiving tradition was going to carry on regardless.

Then last week my grandmother decided it would be easier to stay in Corpus Christi and make the trip to Austin for Christmas instead. Sad? Yes. Big deal? Well kind of, because we just ordered our 36 quail from Lockhart specially for Thanksgiving dinner. I’ll survive though, because they come frozen anyway.

THEN last night my sister informed me that her family (my bro in law, sister, and niece and nephew) are going to Louisiana instead of staying in town due to an elderly family member. Sad? No. Pissed? Ummm yeah!!!

It’s okay I’m going to live, because my mom is still in town so we will have a nice but low key dinner with my mom in celebration of Thanksgiving. Just me, Wesley, Lincoln, and my mom.

Oh wait….

“Mom, you’re leaving town on Wednesday instead of Thursday to go to Corpus Christi so you can’t make our dinner after all?”

Awesome!!!!!

So we could grin and bear and have our Thanksgiving Wednesday night 2nd annual tradition, BUT it would be just like any other Wednesday night with Lincoln asleep by 7 pm and Wesley and I at the dinner table together….just the two of us.

So Thanksgiving for the Mack’s went to hell in a hand basket REAL quick! Wesley is determined to keep our tradition alive even if it is just the 3 of us on Wednesday night… I guess we’re the most important anyway since this is about our little growing family’s traditions.

This year we’re headed back to my dad’s ranch for actual Turkey day for a fantastic feast…so I guess the Thanksgiving holiday isn’t a complete waste.

Here are some Turkey Day photos over the years. 2007 was our first Thanksgiving as a couple and somehow we have not one photo. It was my first time to meet the Macks and it was SUPER eventful out in Leakey, TX at the Mack family ranch.

What are the traditions you created as a family? What are your Thanksgiving plans so I can live vicariously through your family’s traditions?
