When you find out you’re pregnant, one of the top questions on your mind from the get-go is “Am I having a boy or girl???” If you choose to find out, the suspense leading up to that 20 week appointment is nothing short of torturous! This was especially true for me during my first pregnancy. I obsessed over finding out whether I was having a boy or a girl. I really, really wanted a baby girl. (Spoiler alert: it was a precious little boy.) I read every article I could find, analyzed every dream, and took every wacky test out there- including all on this list, to see if I could figure it out on my own. Even though eight out of these ten were actually true for my first pregnancy, there is nothing scientifically proven about these- they’re all in good fun!
Whether you’re guessing what gender your baby will be or looking for fun shower games for a friend, here are some of the top Old Wives Tales to tell if you’re having a boy or girl!
1. The Ring Test
This fun test says to take your wedding ring, tie it to a piece of string, and hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circle, plan for a bouncing baby boy. If it swings back and forth, you’ve got a blushing baby girl on the way.
2. Morning Sickness
Sick as a dog the first trimester? Signs point to a girl. Little to no sickness indicates you’re having boy.
3. Sweet or Salty?
Can’t get enough ice cream? Craving sweets during your pregnancy means you’re having a baby girl. Craving salty or sour? Get ready for a baby boy.
Carrying baby high? Your baby is sugar and spice and everything nice. Low? Snips and snails and puppy dog tails will be in your future.
5. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who is the Fairest of Them All?
Legends say that a daughter will steal your beauty, so if you get pregnancy induced acne or other skin blemishes, chances are you have a princess on the way. If you’re glowing and flawless, you have a prince charming on the way.
6. Pee + Drano???
Yes, this is actually a thing and yes, I actually tried it. This bizarre test says the mom to be should take a urine sample and mix a tablespooon of Drano crystals in it. If the liquid turns green then your baby will be a girl, if it turns blue, you guessed it, it’s a boy. I highly discourage this test! From first hand experience, the combination of the two causes overwhelming fumes that cannot possibly be good for a pregnant mama!
7. Chinese Birth Chart
This ancient method uses your age at conception and the month you did the deed to determine gender. Try it here!
8. Heart Rate
Old wives say if your baby’s heart rate is under 140 beats per minute, blue will be in your future, if it’s over that, stock up on the pink!
9. Dream of Sex of Baby
If you have dreams that you are having a boy, you will have a girl. If you dream about having a girl, it will be a boy. Gender dreams are said to show the opposite of what you are having. (This was very true for both of my pregnancies! When I was pregnant with my boy all I dreamed of was a baby girl, and when I was pregnant with my baby girl, I dreamed of another boy!)
10. Clumsy vs. Graceful
If you’re graceful throughout your pregnancy, you’re having a girl. If you’re a clumsy mama, it’s a boy.
These fun ways to predict your baby’s gender may be silly, but at least they help pass the time until you can finally find out! Were any of these Old Wives Tales true for you?
