My first memory of Austin is of my mom bursting into tears of joy when we passed the “Austin City Limits” sign on our way into town. I was seven years old, and we had just left our life in South Texas to move to the capital city. Austin represented a new beginning for our family; a new chapter of hope and positive change. Though there were many unknowns, I felt giddy with anticipation as I watched my new hometown materialize just outside of the car windows.
Based on our lack of knowledge about Austin and some ill-informed decisions, our family landed in a neighborhood and school that weren’t a good fit for us. It took lots of time, money and energy to backtrack, reevaluate and course correct. Only when we finally landed in a home, neighborhood and school that felt like us did we begin to discover and fall in love with our Austin.
After graduating from the University of Texas, I was eager for new experiences in a new city, independent of my now deeply rooted community in Austin. I made a life-changing move to Los Angeles, where I met my husband Alan (a fellow native Austinite) and enjoyed a significant time of growth and exploration. Although I loved the four years I spent on the West Coast, my time there always had an expiration date. When Alan and I were ready to start a family, we packed up and headed back to the place we would always call home: Austin.
To my surprise, my second move to Austin was as daunting as my first, and again my mom cried tears of joy! We had moved back with the intention of starting a family and creating our first home together… piece of cake for two native Austinites, right? Not quite. We quickly realized that even a familiar setting can feel unfamiliar when you enter a new stage in your life. It became clear that falling back on our own upbringings here wasn’t the right answer because not only had Austin changed, we had changed.
Pearl Street Concierge was born because I saw a need for fellow and future Austinites to have a hand to hold through the very important, life-altering process of moving to or navigating an ever-changing city.
