Top Places In Austin To Adopt A Pet

Adopting a pet can be an incredible experience for the whole family. Adding a furry (or not so furry!) friend to the mix shouldn’t be a spontaneous decision – you’ll want to decide what type of pet is best for your tribe before heading out on your search. Once you’ve narrowed it down and know what type of pet you should get,  here are some of the best places in the Austin area to look:

Austin Animal Center

The Austin Animal Center is the largest “No Kill” municipal animal shelter in the country and provides shelter to more than 18,000 animals each year. That’s big. In addition to adopting or fostering a cat or dog, they also have other animals up for adoption at various times including rabbits, parakeets, ducks, goldfish, guinea pigs and more. The center runs various adoption promotions throughout the year so prices will vary. View their adoptable pets online, visit the shelter and meet and greet different available animals and speak with an Adoption Counselor to see if one might be a good fit for you and your family. Fostering an animal may also be an option. 

Austin Humane Society

The Austin Humane Society is the largest no-kill, not profit pet and adoption center in Austin. You can adopt cats or dogs from the society and browse available animals through their website. If you see an animal that might be a good fit you’re encouraged to visit the shelter, where you can meet the animal, fill out a potential adoption application and talk to an Adoption Counselor. Actual adoption prices vary according to the age, breed, and size of an animal. Please note, if you are looking to adopt a dog and you already have one or more at home,  you’ll need to set up a dog introduction onsite.

Austin Dog Rescue

Austin Dog Rescue started in 2006 and became a non-profit in 2007. The entire rescue organization is volunteer-based and the dog are housed in foster homes so there is no on-site shelter. If you are interested in adopting a dog through Austin Dog Rescue, you can check out their available dogs online and fill out an adoption application online. They are pretty clear about what you need in order to be considered a candidate, so read through their application process online to make sure you qualify as a potential adopter. 

Austin Pets Alive!

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is located at the former Town Lake Animal Center on west Caesar Chavez. They help find forever homes and foster homes for cats, dogs and other animals. Right now it looks like they have two roosters in need of a good home. There are also a lot of volunteer opportunities within APA! and they’re good about sharing any special adoption programs going on through social media. If you are interested in adopting a pet you can check out the available pets on their website. There are some requirements to adopt – you must be 18 years of age and spend at least 30 minutes with whatever pet you’d like to adopt. Make sure to read through all the details on their website before heading over to meet and greet available pets.

Central Texas Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal

The Central Texas SPCA is a a private non-euthanasia (no-kill), limited intake animal shelter in Leander. They’re exclusively donation and volunteer based (no government funding) and house dogs and cats that are available for adoption. There are a few adoption guidelines to check out before visiting the shelter – you’ll need to submit three references and only two can be from family. Adoptions are based on who is the best fit for the pet overall and not on a “first come, first served” basis. There is also a foster care program for those interested!
